Clinical Couples & Family Therapy

Family Therapy rejects the causal, linear model of understanding human problems, which emphasises the internal dysfunction of the 'patient'. Interact ional patterns occurring in the internal world of the individual context are perceived to be influenced by, and then influence, the interact ional patterns within the context of couple, family, work and other social systems in a circular, recursive manner.

Family Therapy techniques are effective with systems smaller than the family including the individual and couples and also with systems that are bigger than the family including work systems. All systems have unique cultures to be understood.

Family Therapy embraces the development of multiple family cultural forms including committed 'defacto' heterosexual, gay and lesbian couples, single parents with children, and stepfamilies as evidence of the family's resilience and adaptability in our highly diverse, multicultural society.
